Facebook is so last century for generation Z!
For many, logging onto Facebook is simply a daily occurrence. We mindlessly scroll through our feeds looking for next interesting story or bit of gossip from the day that we might have missed.
However, a recent report has found that this is not the case for the youth of today, with a new generation now looking to alternative platforms for their daily fix of social media.
The Death of Facebook
The report, produced by EMarketer, predicts that 14.5 million people aged 12 to 17 will use Facebook in 2017. This is a drop of 3.4%, and would be the first fall in Facebook usage for any age group.
The report goes onto suggest that there may be a generation of ‘Facebook-nevers’ – teens and children who are overlooking the platform altogether in preference for other sites. This should worry Facebook in terms of habit growth and usage, as it may be leading to a ‘lost generation’ if trends don’t change.
Where is Generation Z?
In line with Facebook’s loss, image sharing platforms such as Snapchat and Instagram are going from strength to strength in this age demographic. Snapchat’s US user base is predicted to grow 25.8% to 79.2 million people monthly, with Instagram growing at an equally impressive 23.8% to 85.5 million.
So does this signify a change in power? Will the seemingly dominant Facebook go the way of MSN and Bebo, becoming a site of ghost and archive pages?
